Is It a Must To Have a Semi-hollowbody?
I kind of think it is. There are tones you can't get with solids. I have a P-90 Hamer Artist that I just love, Real woody tones and it can handle the heavy gain very well. I just think there are things you can do with semi's that you can't do with solid.

A must? Hmmm...
But they are a revelation. There are so many sounds you can't get from a solid body electric and can from a semi-hollow that is is amazing to get one, begin fiddling through a good tube amp, and hear them just start falling out. With me it was an ES-335. LOVELY SNARLY SOUND. I can say it changed the way I drove the rest of my guitars. Bob

Is that you and the deluxe Bob? Fantastic, sweet & heavy sound grounded by the bass guitar & drum.

These days I mostly ONLY play semi-hollowbodies. I like the way they sustain/feedback with electric guitar, I like the resonance against my body.

I didn't think so at one time in my life. Now that I have one (Washburn HB30), I sold my Taylor 410E...and I don't even miss it. The Washburn is easier on my fingers, and my Taylor played very easily!

Not essential, but if you own more than one electric, every one should have something different about it. Therefore a semi-hollow should have as much consideration as a solidbody or hollowbody. I love the things.

Sure there are, and vice versa. Try to make an ES335 sound like a good Strat or Tele! Last edited by terrapin; 03-03-2014 at 10:05 PM. |

My SoCo 16 has its own personality but more like an ES-335 than the other Collings electrics. It seems like clean tones are where more unique character show up. My PRS Hollow Body made tone without an amplifier. Regardless of what air space might do to tone, I like them a lot and they stopped my guitar shopping for quite a while. Not me, and my treatment of same D Bm G A chords is basic by comparison. The guitar will make speaker ripping tone but I does sound "woody" clean. I think size makes a difference too an ES-335 and this have big low note tone my smaller hollow didn't have and beyond the 15" Collings models. On wood... I love the I-vi-IV-V out of open C on my acoustic but with electric doodle with it from D barre. Same pleasure with the Tele as SoCO.
