Default How much tension does it take to break nylon strings ?

Nylon strings do stretch more than steel.

I have never broken a nylon string after decades of playing. I do not tune above standard (have been tuning half a step down the past 7 or 8 years and using a capo to bring it back up due to mild arthritis). Wound strings will discolor and sound dead, no ring, if you leave them on long enough. I hate to admit it but I have actually left strings on for maybe 6 months. They sounded bad and looked bad but didn't break. Of course during that time I wasn't playing in public. Just got lazy, or busy. If you break nylon strings you have a problem with the saddle or nut or are tuning way too high or attacking the strings like a madman. That may not answer your exact question. I can at least say it takes much more than normal tension to break a nylon string.
