Songs for Open D tuning
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and find it very interesting. For past 3 months I've been learning basic chord positions, a few runs and movable chords in Open D. I find this tuning very melodic adn of course the open chord gives a bit of time for chord changes. I play mainly fingerstyle, accompanying songs to my vocals. Anyone got suggestions for songs where accompanying in open D sounds good. I've done a few Joni Mitchell and adapted some James Taylor, Tom Paxton, and a few other traditional folk songs like Water is Wide. Any suggestions welcome. |

Some Options
Here are some of the sources for my playing pleasure:
Steve Grossman Mike Dowling Dale Miller Jewel Allman Brothers Van Halen Ed Gerhard Laurence Juber Alice In Chains Led Zeppelin They all have printed tab or DVD's with Open D tuning. Some of these are capo'd. I have found Mike Dowling's arrangement of Amazing Grace to be very well done, though I have adjusted it to play without a slide.

If you want to put a few bucks in, John Fahey's instructional material has quite a few great-sounding open D tunes, as well as some in open G. guitarvideos.com sells his stuff.

Love ^ one. I've been digging Mumford & Sons for a while now and they got me into this tuning. Also, they do "Roll Away Your Stone" in open D (with a capo at 2), a song that has a similar vibe to "The Cave" but with a neat-o little Celtic intro part.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP3RJGqn2Pk The Black Crowes' "She Talks to Angels" is normally is open E, but works better for my vocal range at open D. I keep my Silver Creek T-170 in open D most of the time for these songs.

Many of the songs that are played in D will sound good in drop D.
You may have to capo up the neck for your vocal range though.
