OFF THE MARKET - BATSON Custom Parlor Guitar - spalted mango/port orford cedar
Up for sale is an incredible custom Batson Parlor guitar. Some players may consider it closer to a 00 with measurements of 14 lower bout, 10 upper bout, 8/5 waist, 19 body length, along with a body depth of 4 @neck, 4.5 @tail. It is very comfortable and very light at 4 lbs. 3 oz.
The top is Curly Port Orford Cedar with Spalted Mango back & sides. The selected woods are beyond description. To date, Cory Batson has built approximately 100 custom guitars. Due to a lengthy move, he hasnt built any for over a year, but hopes to start back up later this year. Batsons rarely ever come up on the resale market. I found this after a two year search. I am the second owner. The original owner was a Batson dealer, and had this custom-made for himself, receiving it in December of 2014. shortly before closing his high-end guitar shop. Into his 70s, he decided he could no longer play, and I had the opportunity to purchase it from him. As explained when I listed my Leo Posch 00 RW here on AGF last week, I am selling off all of my 12- and 13-fret guitars, and sticking to 14-fretters, which I find more suitable to my playing style. Cory describes the ideas behind his creations: Batson's proprietary bracing, bridge, sound hole, and tail piece design create a unique voice with enhanced sonic superiority allowing our guitars to excel in all types of playing styles from finger style to folk-rock rhythms to gypsy-jazz leads. Batson Guitars are among the most comfortable guitars in the world to play, and continue their proud heritage of balanced light-weight superiority with sleek comfortable necks, excellent articulation, and new armrest bevels. The over-sized side sound hole provides composers and songwriters with a unique personal sound monitor to hear themselves. The unique designs eliminate sound hole feedback from mics, making them perfect for live performances and studio recording. I had my tech add a snakewood strap button, and replaced the original nut with a fossilized mammoth nut, along with a complete set-up. Comes with a custom Ameritage case. Corys current base price is $9,000. No idea when he will begin building again, or if that base price will hold. This guitar listed at just under $10k in December, 2014. With many of the quality woods used getting harder to source, no idea how much this would cost to build now. SPECS: Model: Parlor Cutaway: Venetian Top: Curly Port Orford Cedar Back & sides: Spalted Mango Fingerboard: Ebony Armrest & body binding: Brazilian Tulipwood Neck/other binding: natural woods - not sure what they are Headstock/front: Ebony veneer Lower bout: 14 Upper bout: 10 Waist: 8.5 Body length: 19 Scale: 24.0" Body depth: 4 at neck; 4.5 at tail Frets to body: 12 Nut width: 1.75 Nut material: fossilized mammoth String spacing at bridge: 2.25 Neck finish: satin Armrest: quarter bevel Tuning machines: Waverlys (singles) Weight: 4 lbs. 3 oz. Batson parlor
Hard for me to describe "tone." I'm all about sound, and I know what I like/want when I hear it, though I can't always describe it. Based on terminology I see on AGF, I would say it has more of a modern sound than traditional sound - very similar to other really high-end ones I see/hear here.
Due to the lack of a traditional sound hole and, the sound comes at you differently, even with the side port. Makes it harder to compare. It's a tight sound, very well balanced throughout. I know it struck my tech in a very positive way - and he's sees it all on a regular basis. I will see if I can get some sort of recording dome with it. Always seem to be handicapped with that stuff, but I'll try. Probably not before the weekend. |
