Default Advantage to using Ebony end pins?

I have a nice Martin 000-18 that appears to have black plastic end pins with white dot's in the center of them. Would it make any tone difference (maybe I should qualify that as a noticeable tone improvement in a good way) if I were to change them out for solid Ebony end pins?

Default Ebony

End pins have no influence on the tone of your guitar.

It's just asthetics.

Ebony pins will ABSOLUTELY warm the sound a bit- and remove some stridency by a touch.
I think that some can definitely hear a difference between wood and plastic- and some cannot for whatever reasons.

This has been covered many times before and the answers in the past and in this thread range from absolutely no effect to rather big effect. Seems to me that the material that the bridge pins are made from wouldn't make much difference to the tone. Has anyone any scientific evidence or tested various pins on their own guitars to confirm whether pins made from different materials affect the tone in any way?

Default Ebony

He's asking about the end pin, not bridge pins.

Well then no difference in sound...but I'll be looking for a guitar with multiple endpins in the future...I guess.

I don't see how end pin material would have any effect on tone.

The only thing ebony end pins do is look nice and jack up the price.

I assume the OP means bridge pins. If so, I think they have a “warming” effect on the tone of some of my guitars.

He worded it as "end pins" but I'm sure he meant bridge pins since he talked about changing more than one. Bridge pins can make a difference in the tone. Waterloos are shipped with ebony pins for warmth. And they do the job beautifully but it really all depends on the guitar.

Assuming he meant bridge pins, yeah, pin material makes a huge change to a guitars attack in my experience. I've put bone on some that came with plastic and it dulled the sound....but bone pins on guitars that came with Ebony and hated how shrill they got...every guitar just has a different sweet spot, just like strings. I like Ebony pins fairly consistently though, personally.

The differing weights of materials might have an effect if it is large enough since that influence how the top vibrates around the bridge. If the masses are similar and the holes are slotted rather than the bridgepins I don't think there will be any difference since the ball-ends are locked and held by the bridgeplate.

Aesthetics yes. Tone no.

I put ebony bridge pins with abalone dots on my D-18 and I don't really notice a tonal difference. It's incredibly difficult to notice the difference in bridge pins because you typically also get to hear fresh strings when you change them. It's very difficult for me to distinguish what is "new strings" and what is bridge pins.

Regardless, they look amazing. That's why I'd buy them. Buy them for aesthetics and don't worry about tone.
