Cool The Next Best Thing!

The next best thing to a NGD is when a good friend gets a great guitar!

A young friend of mine who is a veteran with PTSD, lives in a town 4 hours away from me; he moved there 4 years ago or so, and we both really miss the time we spent making a Joyous Noise together!

He's pretty low-income and does a myriad of things to support his family (wife - also a vet with PTSD - and a 10 year-old daughter). One of his projects has been remodeling the kitchen of an old couple who live outside of town, up in the hills in southern Oregon.

The old guy is in his 90's and, apparently, quite the character... anyway, one day he was talking with Chad and showed him a guitar of his; a really old Gibson ES-225. Chad has been a "Fender" guy with his electric guitars, but this one was very interesting to him.

He talked with me about offering to forgo the final payment on the remodel as a trade for that guitar, but he was not in any hurry to do it... he looked the guitar up, online, and knew that it was worth far more than the couple thousand that he was owed... and he wasn't about to try to cheat the guy or pull a fast one on him.

Then, two days ago, the old guy just up and GAVE HIM THE GUITAR!!! Said he couldn't play it any longer and wanted it to go to someone who would play it...

My buddy is OVER THE MOON! The guitar is an absolutely pristine Gibson ES-225, with two P-90 pickups... not even a hint of finish checking on it! He's tried to date it, but Gibson's records are notoriously spotty. Apparently, it's a 1958, but could be between '56 and '59.

He cleaned off the little bit of dust on it and threw a new set of strings on her - told me that the neck is perfect, no adjustment needed! Said the pots were noisy (I told him the trick of just turning them back and forth a bunch of times, and that worked!), but he is in LOVE with those P-90's and the guitar.

I've had a smile on my face for the past couple of days, just thinking about him getting that guitar and playing the dickens out of it! Could not have happened to a more deserving person... oh, and he's definitely a "Gibson Convert" now!

That's got to be the next best thing to getting a new one for yourself, right?

Just thought I'd share some good news...

That’s a win-win-win-win: a win for him, a win for the old guy, a win for you, and a win for us reading the story.

I like to call the ES225 the Alex Chilton model as he is one of my favorite musicians.
