Default Have We Gone "Tat Crazy?"

I visited a county fair a few weeks ago and I thought I had gotten lost and ended up at a tattoo convention. Being summer time, lots of flesh of both genders is exposed and the number and location of tattoos these days is really getting kooky imho. What do these 20 and 30 something youngn's think those tats are going to look like when they hit their "golden years?" Those tats will be faded and wrinkled beyond recognition and I bet many will regret ever going under the needle. But hey, what do I know, I'm just an old fart untattooed curmudgeon. But dagnabit don't say I didn't warn ya'll! I prefer the days when only pirates and criminals sported tattoos.

Anyone in the tattoo removal business is making a fortune now with so many people going to have them removed.

It used to be that people would get a tattoo when they got drunk, now it just looks like they got a tattoo from a drunk tattoo artist

Is that right Riker? Is the tattoo removal business really booming? I had no idea. How the heck do you get a tattoo removed? I almost got a tattoo when I was in Vietnam back in the late 60's, but I wasn't quite drunk enough to go through with it. Thank God I didn't!

Yes, there will be lots of tatts removed in the future I'm sure. I don't know what the kids are thinking, but at least they will all have a shared experience with ugly tattoos on rippled skin in old age.

This is what you want for those pesky tats that were once a good idea, but now, not so much:

I worked in a manufacturer with about 700 employees. For six years, I watched these "kids" come into the company all clean-cut. As they spent time surrounded by their peers I would watch as they slowly sunk into tattoo-hood.

And it wasn't subtle. Virtually every single person would go through a 3 year metamorphosis. On their first day of work, they looked like Richie Cunningham. Three years later, they look like Kat from LA Ink.

I can't believe how many face and scalp tattoos. "Yeah, you're employable......in radio".

I'm not disparagingly anti-tattoo, but what makes me shake my head is two things:

1) Tattoos on prominent places like faces, necks, scalps, temples, cheeks. Things that intentionally can't be made to fit in and, therefore, intentionally (and very willingly) want to look counter-culture.

2) Tattoos that have absolutely no meaning. Or are ugly. I mean.....alll these tattoos and they aren't even GOOD!. So someone has a tattoo of a pair of dice:

me: "oh....I see you got a tattoo"
them: "yeah, you like?"
me: "what is it?"
them: "a pair of dice"
me: "oh I though it was a couple fuzzy tennis balls"
them: "yeah its ART so it doesn't have to look cubes, man!"
me: "so....ummm....why dice?"
them: "I got it for a tribute to my grandfather"
me: "oh.......was he a gambler?"
them: "No. a Lumberjack"
me: "ummmmmok.....why the tattoo?"
them: "its a tribute to them."
me: ".....ummm why dice? does it have anything to do with them?"
them: "no. but its a tribute for them"

Perfect example. Ugly tattoo. No relevance. No meaning. No anything. Blecch

One day, one teenager is going to say, "Tattoos are on all these old people. I don't want to look like all these old people." The next thing you know no kids will be getting tattoos.

Believe me, it will happen. It happened to white belts and shoes.

I find it funny, and sad, that poeple in their quest to be unique jump into some fashion trend and end up looking just like everyone else that was trying to look unique.

For me, I shall remain Tattoo free! I will eventually be the most unique person on the planet.

Removals are on the upswing. I read an interview somewhere where they reported a 400% increase in business over the last few years.

My wife has a friend getting some removed. More pain to remove it than getting it. I think that's funny, but I may be a little twisted.

Recently I overheard a young man who had just enlisted in the Army as he explained the many preparations he was making as he got ready to leave. The first thing he listed was that he had already made an appointment to have some tattoos removed as they would violate uniform standards.
