Strings for Gibson L-1 Archtop
Folks,
What strings would you suggest I use for an early 1900s Gibson L-1 archtop? I use Martin SP Custom Lights for my modern small body guitars. I *think* those might be OK, but I think maybe I could/should use even lighter ones on my new vintage guitar. Thoughts? AJ |

Depends... the Gibson archtops are very different from other vintage guitars, because of their construction. My 1907 L-1 (early pin bridge) could take mediums absolutely no problem - it was built like a tank. Check your scale length. Mine was around 23 1/2", so mediums felt like lights or extra lights. From what I understand, some of the old Gibsons had a problem with sinking tops (which should be evident by inspecting the area around the bridge), but otherwise they are very solidly built guitars.
So from my experience with a similar guitar, the custom lights should be just fine, but consider in the future whether or not you want to move to heavier strings. Last edited by JRB; 02-23-2011 at 07:53 AM. Reason: Trying to clarify my thoughts. It's kind of early in the morning for me. |
