Default Best mandolin under $500ish?

I've been playing guitar for nine years and I'd like to give mandolin a try. What is the best value out there for an entry to mid level mandolin that I could learn on and be happy with until I'm wealthy and can afford a Collings?

I actually prefer the A-shape mandolins, and I know they tend to be cheaper, so that's a plus. I think I like f-holes more than oval.

I've heard good things about the Kentucky mandolins, are there any other brands I should be aware of? I'd love something with a satin finish, sunburst or not.

Anyway, I'm sure some of you play in folk and bluegrass groups where you own or have exposure to some good stuff -- help me out!

Thanks!

An Eastman 505 may fit the bill if you can either stretch the budget a bit or find a used one:

I don't know the price, but Eastman gives a lot of value for the buck.

Just a touch over your budget......but these are awesome mandolins for money.

I've had two over the years and both were excellent. Breedlove makes great mandolins.

(I have NFI in the linked mandolin.)

Good luck......also check out the Big Muddy mandolins.
