Default Mahogany vs Koa or is it Mahogany or Koa

Is Koa Mahoganys upgrade like Cocobolo is to East Indian Rosewood (I know Cocobolo is a species of Rosewood).

Nope, Koa is similar sonically, with Koa having a little more 'air' around the notes.

Koa more glassy and airy sounding. Mahogany more woody. YMMV, depends on builder, particular guitar, etc..

Koa is highly variable whereas mahogany is among the more consistent woods.

In my experience, Koa often disappoints the ear but never the eye. I have played a few Koa guitars whose tone I really liked. Even then, Koa did not sound like mahogany.

Sapele is the wood that sounds most like mahogany.

Not an upgrade ... nor is any wood an upgrade to any other ... they are just different.

There not just differnt, if they were it would still be the same price

E.I.R. $140 Classical B/S
http://www.lmii.com/products/mostly-...ndian-rosewood

Madagascar Rosewood $460 Classical B/S
http://www.lmii.com/products/mostly-...ascar-rosewood

A luthier will build and charge not $320 more, not $1,000 more but $2,000 - $3,000 more, for a classical guitar. now i will spend the 2-3 grand more fore the better sounding guitar. thats why i have one and not two.

You're talking about an UPCHARGE. I didn't suggest they cost the same, but that one isn't better than the other ... just different. You are free to disagree.

In today’s market, availability can have as much to do with the price as desirability but both continue to be factors.

Koa supplies are very limited as it only grows at certain elevations in Hawaii.

Mahogany was inexpensive as compared to other woods used by luthiers but as it has become scarce, it’s cost has gone up considerably.
