Lady Gaga on the Oscars
You could have heard a pin drop (and in fact, we saw many a jaw drop) when Lady Gaga did her “Sound of Music” tribute at the Oscars tonight. (That silence stopped within nanoseconds of her last note ringing out). Knew she could sing--saw YouTube videos of her at the piano when she was still a conservatory student at NYU; and her duets with Tony Bennett are delightful. But we were bowled over by the range and power of her voice--and at the respect and reverence she displayed towards those songs. Not one iota of camp--whether in her performance or appearance. Instead, she showed nothing but class. Even Julie Andrews was floored.
I’ve always said that, having seen both the Broadway and movie versions of “Sound of Music,” I could never picture Julie Andrews as being a nemesis to the nuns at the abbey. She was too wholesome a Maria--unlike Mary Martin, who showed the same spark of irreverent mischief as Maria that she did as Peter Pan (a liveliness none of her successors in the latter role have been able to match). But if they do another B’way revival of “Sound of Music,” I can picture Lady Gaga’s Maria rankling the nuns and getting kicked out of the convent. Of course, that might take showing her tats and wearing a novice’s habit made of meat... And I thought it was cool that John Legend used his real name as co-writer of “Glory.” (Was his co-writer actually the rapper “Common?” If so, good on him too).

Yeah, I've heard Lady Gaga sing blues, jazz, and B'way type tunes. Unbelievable talent. Knocked me out each and every time.

I was actually so disappointed that she was there for THAT song, that I didn't watch her segment. I do like her a lot sometimes, like at the end of an HBO special , where she sang 'Born This Way' A Capella . Yeah, she's got talent. We liked her red carpet getup ; Mrs. S. said she looked like a futuristic robot-maid , which she did, of course.

I got curious after reading this, and looked it up on YouTube. Wow, what an amazing voice she has. I don't care for her usual music, but that was spectacular.

I didn't watch the Oscars or see the performance. But one of the 1st things I encountered this morning as I did my usual Facebook log-on were rave reviews and film clips of it. No doubt about it. Lady Ga Ga has the pipes and is a seriously talented singer. Lets hope that she can now focus on that instead of outrageous costumes that IMO distract from her talent. I'm not a fan, simply because I have no desire to watch anyone wearing a meat suit perform. Regardless of how good they may be.
Dang, I wonder if that's some type of racism? |

I've never seen lady gaga perform, but her story isn't the first one I've heard of where an artist reinvents themselves after they make it. Look at John Mellencamp. Before he made it , he had to turn himself into a punk rocker to get exposure. After a couple t.v. appearances, he abruptly changed back into the southern Indiana boy we all know and love. I believe this was around the time of Ain't even done with the night. I guess the moral is, sometimes it takes more than talent alone to make it big.

this really is her forte, and evidently is how she was trained
it appears that all of the videos being posted to Youtube of the performance last night are being blocked due to copyright, but, there are videos on news sites, worth looking up

Gaga got my attention when she did those duets with Tony Bennett. I saw her performance on the news this morning, and it merely solidifies my high estimation of her talent.

Thought it was fantastic. Found all the tattoos distracting in that gown. Loved seeing Julie Andrews congratulate her--what a class act she is.
