Default Nut seat depth too low.

Hi.
I fond my guitar realy wants to buy in auction site.
It's perfect condition but nut seat.
Action was toohigh then owner sanded nut seat to order to lower string heights instead re cut nut its self.
Owner said sounds good but for me its looking bit odd as nut seat is very low.

Is this commom plactice and is this alterd guitar tone and guter value?
If I take guitar to local luthier then repairble?

Please anyone could advice to me....

Two ways to lower string height at the nut:
1) File the individual string slots (channels)
2) Remove the nut, sand the bottom of the nut, then re-install the nut.

Which of these did the owner do?

To cut a nut perfectly you have to set the nut in place and then cut the individual slots to the proper height.

Sounds to me like you are saying that the guy cut into the wood of the neck to lower the nut?

Welcome to the forum , angus7.

I am assuming that English is not your first language, but even so, if you could post pictures of the nut, it would be a big help.

If the current owner has cut the wood of the headstock, it's no big deal ... it can be repaired invisibly by gluing in a strip of the same wood (mahogany?) with the same grain orientation, and refitting the same nut.

Hi Guys. Thanks for reply. I did not buy as guitar had modfied neck slot on wood and still need neck reset to do correct neck angle.
The guitar was Harmony Sovereign 1203 Mance Lipscomb used in 60s same model. And closet classic looks almost brand new and no play wear. If owner did not modofied nut groove on neck, it just needed neck reset and everything fine.... My dream had gone...

Hi Angus. I'm flabbergasted that anyone would have carved out the neck to lower the nut. You took the good path.

I would still love to have seen a pic. That would have been a fun guitar to own but no real loss.
