Default static electrical charge building on my Tele pickguard

I have a Squier Tele that builds up a static electrical charge as my fingers slide across the pickguard while playing. I can discharge it by rubbing it on my jeans but it's obviously not a long term fix. The sound guy at church was going nuts last night trying to figure out which of my cords was defective. I told him it was static electricity building on the plastic pickguard. He rolled his eyes and said how much he just loves "staticcastors"...LOL I thought it was pretty funny as I had never heard of this before.

How do I fix this? Can I tape a piece of wire onto the underside of the pickgaurd to the metal volume/tone/pup selector control assembly?

Any suggestions? This is driving me nuts.

Thank you in advance!!!

possibly only a temporary solution, but i always keep a few fabric softener cloths(used in your clothes dryer) around my electronic and music equipment. particularly on dry days, i rub my hand on the cloth prior to turning on my electronic/music equipment. i don't know if it would work, but you could tape one on the pickguard to see what happens, or rub it on the pickguard. you may also want to make sure your guitar and amp/equipment are properly grounded. one last thought is a guitar cable, i have one from planet waves, that is grounded so that one end goes in the guitar and the other into the amp, but is not reversible.
good luck!

Hi mike:

That sounds interesting... so, is it "polarized"? -- and is that what makes it a grounded cable? That would seem to be very helpful, indeed.

hi bill:
yes, i believe it is grounded. i have noticed that when i play my strat, that it is a little quieter. however, i have ensured that my entire music/computer system is properly grounded through a furman power conditioner and power strips that come out of ONE wall outlet.
