Default Crossover recommendations

Hi,

I'm looking for a crossover nylon stringed guitar - 48mm nut and radius board.

Unfortunately I can't get anywhere to try them so I'll have to buy online.

So far I have in my sights either the Cordoba 12 vs Taylor Academy 12e-N.

Which is the overall better guitar and are there better options for the money? I have a budget of £650ish.

I will mainly be using the guitar unplugged but would like to option to plug in.

Thanks

Simon

I think the Yamaha NTX series falls into that category also.

Be aware that the Academy is a 7/8 size.

I've played the Yamaha NTX a number of times, and have liked it. The Cordoba's I've played all had the wider neck, so can't comment on those.

Have you tried the Breedlove Nylon (either the Pursuit or Solo)? Those have been consistently good guitars, and I liked them better than the Cordoba's. I think that the Cordoba and the Breedlove are all solid top / laminated back and sides, as is the Yamaha NTX 700. The NTX 900 says 'flamed maple back and sides'....but if it doesn't say 'solid', my experience has been that it's laminated. That's not a bad thing, with the top being most important to the sound, but in that price range, I'd try the Cordoba, Breedlove and Yamaha to see which one felt best.

Cordoba's are well respected by forum members, and are described as having excellent performance both plugged and unplugged.

I don't recall much discussion either pro or con with repect to Taylor's nylon stringed offerings.

A visit to Cordoba's website details the many options available, but I don't think their C12 is a crossover. It is listed as either a cedar or spruce topped classical, 52 mm. nut, non-radiused fingerboard and w/o factory installed electronics.

With the exception of the Academy, I think the other Taylor nylons would be above the price range. The 114's MAP is $899US - cheapest I've seen is $799 so far.

The 214ce-N goes up to $1099US MAP - the 314 goes way up to $1899.

I think the Cordoba/Breedlove/Yamaha are the likely suspects - the
Alvarez AC65HCE has a narrower nut - solid cedar top, lam mahogany back/sides, and is in the price range. The Ibanez crossover is inexpensive, but I think it's a laminated top.

Thanks for all your responses.

Has anybody tried the Taylor Academy Nylon?

It seems that the Cordoba and Breedlove ranges are very hard to come by in the UK! No one seems to have them in stock.

Sweetwater sells the C9 crossover for $859.00 and C10 crossover for $1069.00. These are sold w/o electronics, but are well regarded acoustically. I believe their fusion series are all crossovers, sold with factory electronics, with positive reviews for both their plugged in and unplugged tone.

Of course I have no knowledge of their availability other than stateside.

The c10 is the best sounding crossiver I played.havent played many but the tone still sounds like a nice rich classical guitar. The Yamaha that I played sounded thin and weak in comparison. Could have been that indicual guitar who knows..

What I did find was I hated the narrow nut with nylon.. felt like it was too cramped with thicker nylon trebles.. I have sausage fingers though... So that could be why..

The cordobas are incredible guitars for the money.

I've got a Cordoba orchestra 12 cedar. 48mm width at the nut. I used to own a C10 crossover, but hated the neck shape.

FWIW - the Yamaha crossovers are great amplified. But every one I've ever played sounded like it was stuffed full of towels when played unplugged.

The few Breedloves that I've tried just didn't connect with me.

Something about the Taylor neck shapes also don't agree with my left hand. Plus they seemed to be overbuilt. Sort of like they took a steel string guitar and put nylon strings on it.

Taylor is no longer showing the 114 or 214 nylon string guitars on their website, but you may find a dealer that still has them.
I got my 114ce-N for $670 (I bargained with the manager after missing the Taylor road show), $799 is the usual sell price.
I tried a Breedlove Pursuit nylon at the same store, but it didn't sound or play well in comparison.

Taylor may have changed their website layout - I'm seeing them on the Taylor site, as well as at dealers (Sweetwater). Both pages do say "Availability is limited" and "not in production at this time", so they may be on the way towards a redesign or phase-out.

In the OP's price range, the Breedlove sounds like a good fit...but as always, try before you buy.
