Default Cordoba C5 versus La Petrie Concert?

I would like to add some nylon/Spanish guitar backing to a few songs I am recording. These songs have a tone similar to the Marty Robbins Gunfighter Ballads. As such, I'd like to pick up a classical guitar that doesn't cost too much but still sounds good for this application. Again, I will NOT be playing classical music and probably will play with a pick or finger picks. I rarely play with fingernails or fingertips.

The Cordoba C5 sounds good to me and is fairly cheap at $399. But, the La Petrie Concert is only $100 more and has a solid top, back, and sides where the Cordoba is only a solid top with laminate back and sides. The Cordoba has a very light feel to it, but sounds good to my ears. The La Petrie also sounded good, but perhaps a little more muted than the Cordoba.

So, for the type of music I am looking to record, would you recommend the solid wood La Petrie or the partially laminate Cordoba?

Both are good guitars, but personally speaking, I have never played a LaPatrie that I thought was as good as a Cordoba, including the C5. By the way, I believe most places sell them for $299.

Oh, you're probably right. I was thinking of the plain C5.

I really like the Córdoba guitars. I think they are a great value and the C5 has a very nice nylon string sound quality. I am going to trade my Yamaha NTX 700 for a Córdoba acoustic classical. I think you would do just fine with the C5e as a choice. The La Patrie guitar are nice too, but may be a bit overbuilt for a nylon string guitar. You would not go wrong either way. Having said that, the recordings that Mr. Robbins made (the El Paso trilogy of songs.... "El Paso", "Feleena, from El Paso", and "El Paso City" are some of my favorite songs that prominently feature the acoustic guitar in the Country Music genre. Masterfully composed and played. Grady Martin must have been pretty spectacular as a player. Keep in mind that he is playing an old acoustic archtop in those recordings, so it might be a challenge to get the same sound from a nylon string, especially a piezo pickup electric nylon stringed guitar. Please take all this with a grain of salt, because I am just an old couch player...

I ended up with a Cordoba C5. I like the tone and it was the cheaper of the two.

Indeed, congrats! Did you get the non cutaway C5? I would expect the standard C5 to sound quite nice mic'd. Just by chance, in your search, did you come across the C5sb version? That one is supposed to be spruce topped.

The one I opted for was the C5ce. It was the only one I found locally.
