Default Why is orange such a popular color for hollowbody guitars?

I've noticed that many hollowbody guitars, Gretsch in particular, seem to be orange. Of course there are black and sunburst too, but it just seems like orange is an unusually popular color choice...

That being said, once I save up enough for a G5120, should I get orange, walnut, or black?

With Gretsch, I think the color got its start on their model called the Tennessean, which is a lower cost version of the Country Gent. The University of Tennessee Volunteers claim orange and white as their colors.

Interesting topic... I had an old orange Gretsch for years, bought it at a swapmeet in Orange County, sans case, in 1969 for $35!!!

Of course, now I know that it must've been hotter than a $2 pistol, but back then? I was thrilled!

When I think of Gretsch guitars, the first color that springs to mind is ORANGE!!! Closely followed by white for the White Falcon...

I must admit that there's just something about an orange hollowbody; when Taylor came out with the T3, I lusted after an orange one!

Chet writes about helping design the first Gretsch Chet Atkins model:

"Mr. Gretsch was very enthusiastic about it and insisted the guitar have a color that would identify it and make it stand out. I think it was Jimmie Webster who came up with the bright orange color. When I saw it, I thought it was hideous, but it was radically different for that time so it served its purpose."

Beats me. Why are there so many RED Gibson ES-335's, 345's and 355's?

Interesting story. This actually makes a lot of sense. On a wall of predominantly black, white, and sunburst guitars at many music stores, "Gretsch orange" really catches the eye!

Hmm... an orange Gretsch through an Orange amp... Now there's an arrangement which can only be cured by a serious infusion of ROOT BEER!
