For me it would be to treat my childhood sweetheart better than I did. We are still married after forty five years. Not that I was that bad but I could have been better. She always has been the biggest blessing in my life.

I would tell my younger self to get a blood test for TSH. Lots of folks walking around with thyroid problems who don't know it. Would've changed my life dramatically.
Do you know what your TSH number is? Guitar-wise I would tell my younger self to give up the pick earlier than I did.

So you are 22. Become a prison guard. In my state, retire full pension after 25 yrs. So at age 47, you will never have to work again.

On the afternoon of July 7, 1980, don't take the motorcycle to go to work, wait another 15 minutes and take the car.

Guitar wise: find someone much better than yourself and commit to study and practice. Great teachers are worth their weight in gold.
Life wise: live within your means. Stay out of debt and save, save, save. Oh, and don't start a family until you are financially secure enough to do so. I wish I had someone to give me this advice when I was younger.

Purchase property and never sell it.
Problem is, I wouldn't listen to myself. Never did much like listening because I knew everything. If I could go back, I would do it in a Delorean.

Advice is only good for the future, not a big fan of impossible "what ifs....."
But to answer the question, I would have seriously put time into learning classical guitar. Advice for all our younger players, learn theory, it opens all the doors. At 67, I consider my musical journey and the instruments I've been fortunate to own, beyond my youthful expectations, no complaints.....

The advice about ear protection is VERY good, as well... When you take so much pleasure in music, it makes sense to protect your ability to have such enjoyment into your later years. |

What Advice Would You Give Your Younger Self if you Could Time Travel?
Pretty much the same advice I gave my students for over 30 years, gleaned from a variety of literary/philosophical sources, to prepare them for the future:
