Big question, but still it's possible the answer would differ day to day.

I think the big thing I would want to convey: keep at it, it'll turn out all right. Everything you need, and much of what you want, you'll get, but it may be 20 years or more before you get it.

And you should play more guitar.

Oh, and I'd pass on those stock picks, and a list of some of those cheap used instruments that no one wants much yet.

I'd say "if you ever meet a guy named Wade Hampton stay the heck out of his backyard"

Noted! I'm in a relationship presently. I've been dating the same girl for about 10 months now

The percussive part of fingerstyle playing is a fundamental. I disagree with your statement. I play other types of music that don't require it, but I love what it does for your playing. If you feel that I'm not doing it justice, check out Kelly Valleau do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB142C1e2xI

Thanks to the OP for a thought-provoking thread.
Glad I got you thinking!

What advice would you give yourself now?

Pretty personal for the most part. While most would say I'm both kind, loving and firm with my kids, I could be more kind and more firm. Get them outdoors more and exercising every day. Give more at home.

I liked the advice to spend more time with my parent (one has passed) upthread. I'll see my dad next week for several days.

Be more giving with my friends. Show more patience to everyone. Value what I know more so I can pass it on to more people.

What advice would you give?

1. More math.
2. Read more.
3. Pick something and stick to it. You'll be an expert in something and that's worth something.

Enjoy every second of your life and don't be so caught up on what you don't have.

I was poor from middle school all the way through college because my dad's business failed when I was in middle school. I worked my butt off and I don't have to worry about money. But looking back, I would tell ME to enjoy even the worst of the days and stop complaining about what other kids have that you don't! It turns out life will reverse everything.

If you really want a 12-string then save up and buy a Guild jumbo.
You simply won't be happy with anything else.

You can disagree all you want which is fine in terms of what you personally like . But my next piece advice is the sooner you learn to understand and distinguish the objective difference between your perceptions and reality, the more fulfilled your life will become. To clarify there is no percussive "fundamental" to finger style guitar, no necessity for percussion within fingerstyle . The reality is, it is fundamental only to "percussive style" not "finger style" There is an entire universe of fingerstyle playing from classical, to jazz, to folk, to rock, to blues, that has no guitar body percussion involved. And you may believe it is fundamental to your fingerstyle playing, but that is an illusion of your own perception, not reality.
The video is fine right up until the 1:05 mark . Then the percussion becomes a distraction.
Also note the distraction has nothing to do with you or anyone's playing per se. The distraction is in the style, not the individual performing it.
