Default Impedance. What?

Ok so hopefully you guys can take me to school cuz once again I've found I don't know very much. So what is impedance. I hear a little about high and low impedance signal, line level and instrument level. What does all of that mean? I think of signal in terms of amplitude maybe? Like a weak pickup signal get boosted by preamp, then by an amp. I guess I don't understand all of the terms and I think there are other properties associated maybe besides the amplitude part. 🤷

Pick yourself up a copy of 'The Sound Reinforcement Handbook' by Davis & Jones. It covers this topic and a lot more. Highly recommended!
