Some types of figure only presents itself when wood is quartersawn. So wood can be both figured and straight grained. I would not apply a broad brush to your cracking hypothesis.

Forgive me for a non acoustic guitar (even non guitar post) but this is for sure my best example of figured wood in my collection. Of note, this bass sounds great in an acoustic set .

Hey Cotten!

It's been a few years now, but the stand was purchased from a gentleman on the forum whoms name escapes me right now. The website, however, was www.tonewoodguitarstands.com. No idea if that's still up and running or not but it's not bad quality. Mine is maple with cocobolo bindings.

Ring any bells?

No forgiveness needed, Rob. Your bass is gorgeous! Who built it?

It is a Rob Allen MB-2 5-string. He is a small bass manufacturer based in California. The guitar only has a piezo in the bridge (single volume knob as part of the ebony bridge). Can get a pretty realistic upright bass tone out of it.

With all this beauty on display it's hard to believe that Ovation went out of business.

I saw some of their offerings from Winter NAMM and the guitars look more spectacular. Well done Ovation!

If that is what you have read, not experienced - may want to be reading other things.

I have regularly asked to be shown here, non straight grained back and side sets that have issues with cracking.
Never seen any responses.

Now, the number of straight grained sets with issues can be found quite frequently - possibly because they are more in number, maybe more around for a longer time, more that have struggled with improper environment handling, any number of reasons. But just to toss out that non straight grained woods are more prone to cracking than straight grained, I see that as an opinion only with not much if any concrete evidence or documented history to back it up.

I say, post away with your beautiful woods - here's one of my Brazilians.

I think twisted burl wood is probably the strongest part of the tree - and often the most beautiful. I've never seen a circular/arced crack in a guitar.

Thanks! We probably have even more bass playing guitarists among us than we do banjo players, though I understand why they're afraid to confess. Beautiful bass!

I'd also be interested to learn the scale length and what you're asking for it. I'm a big fan of both koa and Bozo guitars, as you might recall.

Wade Hampton Miller

Wade,

The guitar is a 6-string, and the top wood is Euro spruce...standard/long Martin scale at 25.4".

...for full descriptions click on the FS link in my sig. file. I have a matching EIR guitar. Plenty of photos, etc.
