Writing when you're happy
Does anyone write good songs when they're happy?
I've had a pretty dynamic life.... all the ingredients that should make for some good songs. But in spite of all the things I've been through, I'm too happy to come up with good blues lyrics. What can I do? I have a good job. My wife loves me and I don't run around on her. I'm not oppressed by anyone or anything. I'm not filled with guilt or fear or remorse. Someone help me.

Put yourself in someone else's shoes. I'm pretty sure John Prine was not actually an old woman named after his mother...

Hi Steve...
Absolutely great songs come out of great life experiences. Many love songs are written about the positive side of relationships and good experiences. Certainly blues, some folk and a good share of country & western music have seized upon the down sides of life. A few ''hits'' from my youth and times since... Clapton's ''Wonderful Tonight'', the Turtle's ''Happy Together'', Sonny & Cher ''I Got You Babe'', ''Eagle's Wings'', ''Thank God I'm A Country Boy'', ''All You Need Is Love'', ''Yellow Submarine'', and the ultimate no matter what life dishes out...Don't Worry - Be Happy! I realize your question was do people write when they are happy, and the answer is sure. I write better when I'm happy. |

Larry, I had to re-read your post to make sure you weren't calling "I Got You Babe" an absolutely great song!

Just about any experience can be written about. A lot is in how you approach it. The blues is about story telling. I once went to meet my wife for dinner, took a wrong turn, and ended up in a part of town where everyone looked at me like I was dinner. I stopped at a fire station for directions, where a friendly fireman asked me where I had gone when I became lost. When I pointed, he said, "No, man. You don't want to go there unless you've got a gun or knife." I knew it was a blues song in the making.
Speaking of which, I need to record that one. Bob

A very popular song it was - I am working on a fingerstyle arrangement of it. People my age really connect with it. I'm also working on Petula Clarke's ''Downtown'' and April Steven's ''To Know You Is To Love You''. |

Whether I'm happy or sad never seems to affect the quality of my tunes . . . perfect crap, either way.

I started a song on 12/7 after I did my annual moment of silence for those we lost on 12/7/41, I'll be posting it soon.
I have a good life and have a debt that can never be repaid to those who fought for our country over the years. I don't dwell day in and day out on terrible events like Pearl Harbor or 9/11, but we can never forget. So my point is that even though you have a happy life, there are things that you can draw on to inspire you in some way to write a melancholy/bluesy song.

BTW, "Downtown" seems like a great candidate for fingerstyle arrangement.
