I was never one for cutaways but I like that Somogyi-esque style

Yes; Tom doesn't like the unfinished look. Interior of sides are finished lightly as well.
I think he uses a thin coat of shellac so as to not impair vibration etc. I guess it's "sealed" rather than finished. I can check.
Rory Dowling in the UK finishes the interior for the same reason - he feels it makes for a "classier" guitar.

Cheers,
Steve

Go straight to the top of the class!

I'm quoting from an email Tom sent me:

"Binding and purfing and backstrip; I’m switching to Rocklite Ebano composite as standard on all of my guitars, its a real wood, resin infused material, pure black, more stable, less likely to crack and delaminate and simply a better quality material than the ebony that is available today. Plus is massively more environmentally friendly. It actually works out slightly more expensive than ebony and in my opinion is a superior material in this application. I wanted to check that you’re okay with that, it won’t change the price to you. Binding is there to protect the edges of the top and the back of the guitar and to frame the guitar aesthetically, i think Rocklite does that beautifully.

I’m also keen to use it for the fingerboard again for reasons of stability, durability and evenness of colour. When it comes time to make the bridge I will carve two, one in ebony and one in Rocklite and compare and contrast and report back to you. Increasing number of builders are switching to these composite products. They get a bad rep due to clumsy application on factory guitars in the 70’s but they’ve come a hell of a long way, these new products are VERY impressive. Please let me know how you feel about this".

I've said endlessly not to buy a dog and then try and bark yourslef: Listen to your luthier. So I said "yes". Sounds like the right thing to do?

Cheers,
Steve

Somogyi teaches that as part of his building philosophy, so I'm not surprise his former apprentices do the same! The idea is to slow down the release or absorption of moisture into the wood, so that it is not a sudden change.

I think that Rocklite looks great, and am sure we'll see more of it in the future.

Tom is thinking about the headstock.

He has burl maple (I think) in mind, but dyed grey. Mockup here:

And will look like this:

Steve

Bit quiet around here?!

Tom has not been quiet though:

Box is together and is routing it for the binding:

Binding glued in and waiting to dry:

Steve

Wow! What news!

As it happens, Tom was speaking to me about that very same guitar just a few weeks ago and was wondering why it had hung around a little. He thinks perhaps because he's no longer in the USA? He was sure that if people played it they would buy it because he reckons it's up there sonically with the best he's made. Acccordingly, I don't think you will be dissapointed! Please let us know how you get on.

Cheers,
Steve

I sure will! I can't believe it was there that long either.

Sorry for some slight tardyness to those following this thread; I have a day job that gets in the way a bit too much sometimes.

Anyways, things are racing ahead. The guitar is practically done and the next set of pics I upload will the be finished instrument. In the meantime, I hope you find these as mouthwatering as I did when Tom sent them to me:

We worked a lot together to get the aesthetics of this instrument right for me. I wanted the lines simple and graceful, and, although biased, I think we got the headstock, cutaway and rosette to all sing together as a harmonious whole. And what about that padouk?! Who said it looked boring?! It will be very exciting to see it under finish.

Cheers,
Steve

That is really stunning! I love the fretboard extension, and the rosette! Congratulations.
