Thomastik plectrums on GS Mini

I'm thinking of trying the thomastik plectrum on my GS mini to tame some of the brightness.. But not sure what gauge I should go for, 012-059 or 013-061?

Welcome to the forum.
I have a guitar that I've tried several different types of strings to find a warmer tone.
The Thomastik-Infeld Plectrum 12-59 are very good - but expensive.
Here are some others to consider;
-La Bella Silk & Steel 710M 12-56
-GHS Silk & Bronze 370ML 12-54
-DR Sunbeams RCA-12 12-54
-Newtone Heritage Low Tension NHS.013 13-55

I've used these strings for several years on my main guitar just for the "sweet, mellow" tone and rich lower end. Do keep in mind that these strings have a lower tension than the same gauge from other manufactures. Don't be fooled by the 059 and 061, they don't have the tension one would expect from that gauge.

The short scale of the GS mini will reduce tension by itself. My guess would be if you use mediums then go with the 061, if you use lights then the 059 is probably a good starting point.

I’d go with the 12-59’s on the GSM. I really like Plectrums but I recently bought two sets of Santa Cruz Parabolic Low Tension strings and I am very excited about how good they are on my K-22 and SCGC Skye 00. They are about $4 less than the Plectrums and I ordered more to try on my other guitars. Could become my go to string brand if I get 8-12 weeks life from them. They are a bit brighter than the Plectrums and have close to the same feel.

Hi Jocke and welcome.

I have used TI Plectrums for some time – they are primarily a low tension string and while they are pretty mellow too, any taming of brightness is secondary to their particular offering for tension.

As another poster said, with a short scale neck you may not need low tension. I recommend you try Newtone stings for a mellow sound, particularly their Master Class strings. They are cheaper than TI strings too.

Thanks! I maybe should take a look at the Newtons then.. I live in Sweden and can get Thomastik for about 15$. But i may need that higher tension to get some volume out of the GS Mini?

If I go for Thomastik, will .061 fit in the nut?

I considered the Plectrum AC110 (extra light) on a CA Cargo and a Cort AD Mini, both short scale, and I tune down to G, so the tension is minimal. Rich sounding strings, however the 1 and 2 strings had a sharper, somewhat piercing tone, and the transition from the smooth #3 to the sharper #2 was an aural jump. The Classic S Rope Core KR116 smoothly transitions from string to string, and I would never know from their volume that they are Classical strings. I currently have them on four of my steel strings.

I have dealt with Newtone's Neil Silverman by email and have found him to be a great guy. Why not give him a call since you are almost a local (relative to me....I'm in Australia!)
