Contact Piezo Pickup To Tonedexter Experiment
I bought a Dimarzio contact piezo pickup to see if it works with my guitars with no pickups, and run it to my Tonedexter.
Hey, they don't sound too bad! Just as good as any undersaddle, I suppose...but we need technology to improve the sound, and I have it! It will probably scream like a demon up loud... So they say the (removable) putty that you stick the pickup to the guitar with won't mark the guitar. It does! And then I tried the old Gibson L-0...and if it has a mark after, I can't tell for all the others. Quick recording - made Tonedexter file with mic and pickup, then removed mic, so this is playing through the TD file, no mic: https://soundcloud.com/bk7-3/l-0-td77 Photos: BluesKing777. |

Easy to duplicate sound each time without all the setup for a mic. Doesn't get much better.

I tried it on a National single cone and it is terrific!
The pickup doesn’t have a lot of level, so a nice preamp is needed but probably all a waste of time when it feedsback..... But I have been having fun amplifying my guitars that don’t have pickups and are normally left on the rack. BluesKing777. |

That sounds REALLY good. Very natural so I thought. Very Mic-like. What did you think?

What a gorgeous guitar that is. Scrumptious.

I thought so too! I added the strummy things occasionally to highlight the mic like sounds. I don't want to add pickups to the guitars like the L-0 in the photo, so this is an idea. Except it is going to feedback in an amp, isn't it? I haven't tried this one, but I have had various 'stick ons' over the years for resos and there is always a 'good/bad' to it. So it is all a bit pointless if I can't take it anywhere, then! Might be alright at a quiet restaurant or cafe.... I suppose I could run my Gibson Blues King L-00 through the wavemap I made for the above track, see what happens? Oh, and my 22 TD slots are full - I need 250 slots if I keep doing these silly things.... BluesKing777. |

Thanks! 1937 Gibson L-0 that was repaired a few years back - the previous owner had 'decorated' the neck and didn't like black finish, maybe... Sounds best late at night! BluesKing777. |

Putting that pickup close to the bridge will give you less feedback and will likely sound just as good Dexterized.

Thanks! I am getting a lot of noises from my right hand leaning on the bridge, and also from my right pinky braced against pickguard for fingerpicking. I am used to undersaddles, I suppose...and I would never put a mic that side. I had it on the bridge, a very different sound, very bright and quite unusable for my style - I saw someone had it like that on Youtube. A lead guitarist type would probably think it was the bees knees.... (I haven’t braved the contact through my amp yet, nice and peaceful here at the moment but things change!) BluesKing777. |

Very nice recording. Definitely sounds like a miked guitar to me. Lovely old Gibby, too.

Sounds great. I never cease to be amazed at the clarity of the Dexterized tone. Beautiful guitar too.

Thanks!
I risked the putty marking up a high end guitar I have, Martin Authentic, but put the piezo on the pickguard so any residue from the putty might rub off. It sounded pretty good but not worth the mucking around - I just couldn't get any level. But I think the best file I currently have is from my 59 LG3 with Martin Thinline undersaddle. I keep returning to that one! Weekend approaching - who knows what we could get up to..... BluesKing777. |
