My Hero is gone.....
A little before 2 a.m. Heaven gained another angel.
I struck gold in the parent lottery. He taught me so much just through osmosis - we were so alike in our DNA that the "learning" was simply being around each other. He grew up the baby of 14 kids during the depression, and as a result, was incredibly hard working - ran a dry cleaners in the 60's, and got into restaurant management in the 70's through 2001. The last 10 years he ran an Old Country Buffet and had 80 employees under him. 60 hour weeks until he was 67. On his off days he'd come up to play golf with me. After he retired we had 10 good years of playing every day. I'm SO thankful for those times. I spent about 10 hours yesterday at his bedside holding his hand. It was so hard to leave last night, but I knew somehow he was waiting for me to go before he gave up. He was down to near 100 lbs and just couldn't go on. I told him several times yesterday it was OK and that I would take care of Mom.....64 years together, I know that was his concern. Two and a half years ago I moved out of my home, sold about 80% of my belongings and moved my business into a downtown commercial space so I could help take care of him. It was incredibly hard at times, but I wouldn't trade a minute of it. My Dad - My Hero

Sorry to hear of your loss, Todd. Your post reveals that you were lucky to have him in your life, and that he was lucky to have you in his life. You offered such deep love and appreciation...rare and precious gifts to any person.
And the devotion you have shown: making such changes in your life to care for him in these last years. Such beauty within the challenges and sorrow! I am sure that your Dad has experienced great pride in the man you are. My condolences.... |

Thanks so much everyone. I'm doing OK and at peace with everything. Mom is going to need extra TLC as she's suffered with anxiety and depression issues all her life.
I'll miss him dearly, but his pain is over. I have to work on erasing the images of his last months from my mind (one of the tough parts of being a caregiver) and remember the rest of the wonderful life we had together.

Condolences on your loss. Lost my Dad many years ago and I still think of him every day and feel lucky to have had my now life informed by guys like that.
When WWII broke out, he was desperate to serve but the recruiting office in Harrisonburg, Virginia wouldn't take him due to limited sight in one eye. He heard the office in Richmond was more lax in acceptance so he rode to Richmond on the back of his friend's Indian motorcycle (his friend's leg was in a full cast at the time) and was able to enlist and serve in France. A lot of kids today grow up not knowing people like that. |

Hi Todd,
I’m sorry for your loss, but glad your hero is now beyond pain. The good memories don’t go away. And they span a much wider time than the rough ones. Peace, Jimmy
