Taylor ES-N question
Just got a 712ce-N the other day and have noticed that while plugged into my amp the B and high E strings are noticeably louder than the rest of the strings. Is that common or should I have it looked at? I don't really feel like shipping it to Taylor and the shop I bought it from doesn't have a tech.
Thanks! |

How much experience do you have with onboard electronics on a nylon-strung guitar? The piezo system used (at least in part) on a lot of Taylors does, to my ear, tend to prefer the trebles to everything else. But this isn't just a Taylor issue, I think it's a piezo issue. So if this guitar is using their piezo system, that could just be a feature of the particular type of pickup being used. Fortunately, Taylor has really good eq built in (or they used to), so I've normally been able to balance that out. Yamaha has also developed a really good hybrid system to overcome some of the "tinniness" of an all-piezo system, by adding a microphone or a soundboard transducer. Again, the EQ options help a lot on these. If you've heard and played loads of amplified nylons, then I'd say you can trust your own ears and decide what to do from there. If you're feeling super ambitious, try posting a raw recording here and see what people who actually know what they're talking about (i.e., not me) have to say about this. To my thinking, the plugged in sound and the playability are the two great things about the Taylor NS series, so if you're not happy with the sound when plugged in, it's probably not going to be the greatest experience owning this one. Good luck with getting this sorted!

I've seen this on some of the less expensive pickup/preamp systems on acoustics. Though usually it's the bass strings that seem louder and the high E and B strings are noticeably quieter, at least in my experience. I haven't experienced this issue in the several Fishman Presys Blend systems that I've had in my various higher-end Cordoba nylons or the LR Baggs systems that were in my Breedlove Masterclass Bossa Nova, CM and C25 SR/eH. In my experience, all of the cheaper pickup/preamp systems that were in my less expensive acoustics had the issue of inconsistent volume/response between strings. A very frustrating thing as a player. In my opinion, a 700 series Taylor should absolutely have a good balance/blend of the strings and should have never left the Taylor factory that way. Personally, I also thing that all higher-end acoustics should have systems with six individual saddles and six trim pots to correct this issue, or dial the sound in for a player's touch and taste.

I talked to Taylor and they said the volume should be very balanced and to take it back to the dealer and have it adjusted.
I have a takamine p3fcn and a Cordoba maple 12 and neither have this problem but I didn't know if Taylors were known for this sort of thing. |
