For you fingerstylers. Would you consider this song "hard?"
"Josephine" from Pokey LaFarge.

Personally, no. I mean, I could do it with no problem .
I'd say it's "intermediate" level - which covers a hell of a lot of ground, of course . (beyond "beginner", but not "advanced".) It's standard Mississippi John Hurt style: simple chords, alternating bass, minimal melodic accompaniment. The hardest part is mastering the "independent thumb" (keeping that rocking while one or two fingers fill in) - if you're past that stage, this tune should be easy. If not... then it may be hard.

I've been playing ragtime and blues in that style for just over a year, and could probably play that with a week or two of hard work. I'd say intermediate as well. Pretty song too!

Intermediate but pretty basic intermediate. Pokey Lafarge is a recent favorite of mine now. He was on Prairie Home Companion some time ago and I heard him and his band there,

As already commented, I would say this is beyond beginner but not advanced, with the challenge being to keep the steady alternating bass, especially whilst singing. Nothing too demanding of the left-hand.
Demonstrates that the guitar accompaniment doesn't need to be complex to be effective but is important to how the song comes over...sounds good, doesn't it... |

Intermediate ...not too bad to learn, you should be able to get it within a week or two

It is so relative and therefore a bit hard to judge. I can play that immediately - I played along with the video.
However I would still call it beginner intermediate, and it is just not playing the notes - having the timing, accenting, and sense of style down are what takes more work.

Not that difficult, but still a fine performance of this song.

There are no absolutes when it comes to terms like 'easy', 'intermediate' or 'hard'. For someone who acquired this level of technique as a teenager in the 1960s it's pretty easy. For someone who has taken up guitar in their fifties or sixties in the last couple of years it's going to be a challenge.
If you like it, learn it. Good luck. |
