Default Voicetone T1 Question For Users

While testing out the T1 yesterday I noticed that my mixer meters showed a dramatic jump in gain when I turned the effects off with the switch (even though I already had the Tone Enhancer and Compression/De-esser knobs at their minimum settings).

Is that the way it typically works?

I'll be using the pedal with a variety of singers and I'd hoped to simply stomp the switch and turn it off for the folks who work the mic well and don't need compression. Will I be better off just leaving the pedal on at all times and controlling the compression and tone enhancer with the knobs? It would be a bit of a pain to need to re-adjust mic levels every time I stomp the effects switch.
