Dial caliper or something that will measure to a thousandth of an inch. They have to be precise measurements. This page has an explanation. http://www.guitarsaddles.com/products.asp

if your pins are a bit loose,and going to far into the hole,(my martin D 35 did this,the wood had gradually worn away) What you can do is cut that little ball off the old string,and slide it on the new string,install like you usually do.It took care of my problem.
