I have to say, if Yo-Yo Ma and Erik Friedlander choose carbon fiber over the finest wood instruments the world has to offer, since, I imagine, they can get the best of the best custom made for themselves, well, that's a pretty strong statement about the tone one can get from a carbon fiber instrument. They aren't choosing it to camp with, or play at the beach, they are choosing it on tone alone I suspect.

The sound clips for all the instruments are incredible and worth a listen.

That is super interesting!

I can't wait to play this video for my son (he plays and loves cello)

I might suspect YoYo and Erik to choose cf cellos as a tour instrument but I bet they prefer to record with wood?

Unfortunately, compared to sales of guitars, cellos are are a small number--violins too--so the prices for CF for either of these instruments is a big, big investment compared to CF guitars.

Maybe order a 7" neck radius, lose a string or two, and play the CF guitar with a bow?

Oooooo. Just checked the L&C cello site and see the price is much less than when I last checked many years ago. Still not in the guitar range, but much closer than it was.

You can go to their website and it lists all the prices for each instrument. ~$5,500 for the violin, at the other end nearly $13,000 for the bass. Really cool headstock I might add

Yo-Yo Ma actually played a CF cello at the Presidential Inaugural in 2009.

Very cool.

I have to think as you see more top flight musicians like Yo-Yo Ma playing CF instruments, the naysayers claiming you can't get "real" tone from CF may have to reconsider

And who is to say they don't record with them too?

I'm assuming they have a financial incentive to play and endorse the instruments. Therefore i take what they say with a grain of salt.
