Default Thinking about a purchase...

I rarely take my guitars out of the house except for going to lessons. That said, since this is Kentucky the summers are hot and the winters are cold, so it's always a deal where I have to go straight to the lesson, then home to drop the guitar off, instead of say going on errands, stopping to eat, etc. So I'm thinking about a CF guitar for this purpose. To save me time with searching, is there a quality hierarchy with CF's like wooden guitars....or are the Rainsong's, Composite Acoustics, etc all about the same?

There are only a handful of manufacturers, and they tend to target more or less the same price range.

I have two Rainsongs (a shorty and a WS 12-string) that I am very happy with.

CF instruments of all stripes are still uncommon, I do not believe I have ever seen an Emerald in person for example. A Rainsong or CA will be the easiest to find.

I bought my Rainsong for the same reason; South Carolina weather can be brutal and I didn't want to take my nice wooden guitars out; I love my CF guitar; I've gotten many compliments at lessons and I'm worry free now.

Quality of build, fit and finish on Emeralds, Blackbirds and Rainsong have been superb by all reports for some time now.

CA is likely also building at a similar level, but I've simply read less about them in this regard in the last couple years compared with the other 3 builders. CA owners will write and fill in this information shortly, I'm sure.

Default cf

Have owned CA and Rainsong and currently own a Blackbird 'Lucky 13'.
For the purposes you suggest, these CF guitars are 'fit-for-purpose'!
Absolutely no worries taking them out. I've taken them to the beach and on trips on planes and trains. Great for road trips and camping.

Of the three brands, I prefer the Blackbird for tone (and looks).
With the side sound port, the sound it 'in your face'. You can actually HEAR what you are playing!

If you travel by plane at all, you should checkout the OF660.

Lots of good reviews on the forum on this model.

I have played and owned most brands and the problem currently is the quality right now with Rainsong, Blackbird, Emerald, and CA are all great. It more comes down to what sound and appearance you want. Emerald I think does have an edge on appearance with their totally perfectly even weave, or wood veneer tops. But I must admit I love the more traditional looks of say the Lucky 13. (Copy of a 30s Gibson?). With Rainsong I have switched saddles between two Rainsong guitars and had no effect on setup. Try that on two wood guitars!!
Bottom line you need to play them to know what would be your best fit.

I bought a CA and was not impressed. Then bought an Emerald X20 and absolutely love it. Haven't tried a Rainsong yet but have heard good things.
