George Carlin. I was exposed to him waaaaay too early; his AM/FM album was always on the turntable. He was just as cynical in the early 70s but not quite as angry. Seeing him dressed as a conductor on Thomas the Train after seeing him live reciting the 7 words you can't say on television illustrated how truly cracked our society it - and I think it was brilliant.

I'll also vote for Robin Williams as well as the original Not Ready for Primetime Players....

I can't pick one, but I do have a couple of stories about 2 of my favorites.
I was a fan of raunchy stuff in high school and thought Pryor was the greatest. I purchased his album entitled "That N__________ Crazy" and of course hid it from my folks. One of my younger brothers was also a fan and he was not as careful, and he left it on the back porch, where it remained undiscovered until a warm summer afternoon when the minister stopped by to have a glass of iced tea with my mom.... My roommate in college was big shot in student government, and although we were a small school he managed to get Rodney Dangerfield to come play our gym. This was the late 70's and he was a very big deal, it was parent's weekend and everyone loved him. And those who spent time with him offstage were extremely complimentary, they said he was "on" all the time, but in a low key, non dominating way. I'm not much on comedy these days, but those 2 and Jerry Seinfeld always make me laugh.

I've have been a lifelong fan of comedy and comedians. Of the comedians I've seen in person, I'd have to say George Carlin was the one who made me laugh the longest and hardest, with Bill Cosby a close second.
As an aside, I happen to collect comedy records, and probably have one of the larger collections in the US - over 3500 at last count with no two the same. Ninety nine percent are comedians no one has ever heard of, and often for good reason. A partial sample below: |

Whose show would I rather go to?
That's easy. Living. They'd be funnier and smell a little less.

I was always relieved to hear Cheers was filmed in front of a live studio audience for the same reason.
