Just a quick update...I went with a mahogany Mainland tenor with a low G and couldn't be happier. I think it will blend in very nicely with what we do. Mike at Mainland was great and I plan to get another from them down the road. Thanks everyone for your help and guidance!

IMHO, the baritone would be a GREAT addition:
Not only is it easier for a guitarist to play, but it adds something to the total tonal spectrum. I have a Kanilea baritone and play it with a small string group - bass guitar, guitar, concert uke and myself. Works out wonderfully. I particularly like to pick some tunes to add to the mix. Baritone or tenor, I don't think you can go wrong. Both would add something. |

Played my concert uke recently with electric guitar and bass and could get just enough volume before feedback to be heard. Filled the sonic spectrum nicely, but I have a K & K installed tenor Pono coming so as not to have a volume issue ever. I love the high G sound.

I picked up a tenor, and am enjoying it, but now would like to add a Baritone to the mix.
Though... does anyone string and tune a tenor to guitar tuning??

i have the martin TK1 all koa and the Mainland baritone uke, cedar top and rosewood.
I play uke more than guitar..have many ukes IMHO. The mainland Baritone outshines he martin TKI in every respect, sound, volume and sustain...The martin has a very thin nut and fretting can be a pain in the @#$. The Bari is a pleasure to fret. In the Bari you can sting it like a uke GCEA and it becomes a super tenor, or string dgbe like a baritone first 4 strings of a guitar. or do what i do string with a renetrant baritone, high d...very neat sounding. Whatever you do go to the southcoast ukulele website...they make the best and most customized string set for ukulele musicians... alos checkout the New Cordorba mini guitar.....2 inch nut with like a classical, 20 inch scale...baritone body....i have one...its a blast....chord just like a guitar...and they now make strings for eadgbe, at southcoast with good tension and sound. It is becomming my favorite instrument...its pretty cool looking too..and good build quality. the sprucetops have more volume and sustain...i have the ovangul top,, a little less bringt but looses some volume. sound like a combo guitar and uke.... A couple points:
1) Yes, you will 'get walked on' if you play a bari against the other instruments you mentioned. 2) A cheap bari is worthless. Save your $$ and buy a good one. At least a Pono or Mele. 3) Capoing a tenor is a good thought but only a bandage. You're still missing the bass effect that the bari offers. IMHO |

Kupuna, spot on bull!

I managed to pick a vintage Kawika aka David Holt baritone with a Cedar top and some nice sapwood koa. awesome this one. His baritones have a shape of its own. Sort of Dread like configuration with a deep body. All this translates to a nice bass and sustain. To bad uncle Kawika hsd retired from luthiery.
