I thought more about this and it's more like 80% 213 and the rest a mini barre so I can fret the e string 3rd to 5th fret as needed.

I use 123, 234, x02225 and a one finger barre if I don't want the open high E string or I'm doing some blues shuffle with my pinky.

234 is useful as that's the one that transforms into a barre moving up the neck since the index finger is free.

This is me, got a GS mini and tried every combo until settling on the only one that works for me; using finger #2 on strings 2 and 3, and finger #1 on string 4.

While it might require more finger lifts because of the structure - no anchor finger to the E chord, for instance - I can more consistenly hit the chord quickly and be close to having it sound properly.

From that single position alone you can move only fingers 2-3 to 3rd fret to form a Dm, or drop the first finger back to the first fret for AMaj7, or lift the 1st finger for an A7. You can leave the first finger in place and move fingers 2-3 to form a D without having to reconfigure.

As a teacher and player, there is no single fingering more right or wrong. But there are a few which make more sense.

As a beginner 2-1-3 has been the most effective way for me to do it for the same reasons that lj has stated.

I half-barre the three notes with the fingertip of my index finger. It leaves my other fingers free to embellish as needed. Even on a 1-3/4 nut width I can't crowd three fingers (2-3-4) close enough to prevent muting adjacent strings on that chord. I have fat fingertips.
