FWIW... I picked up a new Epi Sheraton II Pro six months or so back. Epiphone has really upped their game in electronics quality and playability -- This guitar is a treat to play and very versatile in the tone department. Ability to coil split the neck and bridge p'ups individually provides great variety and the quality of the pickups, for the first time, doesn't have me searching out replacements. Tone & volume pots offer a smooth and linear adjustment curve -- Easy to get the tone you're looking for.

Price is good, neck comfort great, finish is much thinner than earlier iterations, great look in Wine Red. I highly recommend giving these new Sheratons a try.

Default Good article on reverb.com

I'm kind of on the same hunt except I'm also drawn to the Epiphone Casino Elitist (full hollowbody) as I'm a big Beatles fan. Anyway, this article is a couple of years old but still very informative and it covers a couple of the models that you mentioned and includes links to active listings.

I have played all three of your choices. I like the Guild and Eastman best. The pups are totally different in character. So it is best to play both and see what feels and sounds great to you. Both are good choices. I lean Guild as I like their pups better. But my ears are not on your head.

I have an Eastman T386 whose pickups I swapped for Lindy Fralins. I've never had a 1.75 nut before, but it was a quick acclimation. It sounds and plays great.

I have not played the other guitars.

I bought an EPI ES335 a few years ago and immediately upgraded it with a BCS ES 335 Vintage wiring kit and two SD Antiquity Humbuckers. Total investment was about $700. Love this guit!

You can find used Heritage 535s for < $2,000.

Actually, I've tried two of those three guitars - the Guild and an Eastman. The Guild was a bit too narrow necked for me, but sounded great. I owned an Eastman T386 for a while, and sold it last year after buying a Gibson. Someone in NC is really enjoying it now. Very nice guitar, well built, nicely finished, good stock pickups. It just fell by the wayside after I upgraded.

You can get a new 72 Re-issue Telecaster (made in Mexico) for under your budget. Shop around for a used one for less then half of your budget.

This is the most versatile guitar i have ever owned (I've owned lots). It will cover the ground you describe, as well as country, and rock. This guitar produces the most gorgeous clean sounds I have ever experienced.

You can not go wrong one of these. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender/C...73888000471.gc

I too was on the same pursuit about 18 months ago. Bought an Epiphone 335 Dot and soon sold it because it didn't have "it." Later tracked down a 1984 Gibson ES-335 Dot Reissue with Tim Shaw humbuckers. Still have it and it does have "it."

However, I recently acquired a new semi-hollow body that I can't put down. I think it's the best guitar I've ever played and is the only time I've ever bought a guitar that I honestly wasn't intending to buy, but couldn't walk away from. It's one of these:

Maybe not in your price range (yet), but don't overlook Duesenberg.

Check out Ibanez, too. They make some very nice hollow and semi-hollow guitars.

True true! I never played 335 but when I switched from LP 10 years ago to this IBANEZ GB30 I search no more!

Some sounds recorded in studio and at home:

I have the Eastman and it compares very favorably to the Gibson ES when comparing its features, playability and build quality AND the price point.

D'Angelico EX-DC, in my experience, is a fantastic 335-style guitar. I had a Memphis 335 and the D'Angelico was a superior instrument. The Kent Armstrong paf clones were wonderful! Thought I'd toss that out there.
