From Eastern Kentucky. Unusual in that it has a redwood top.

Default Another SilverAngel pic

Most Silverangels come distressed, mine included. Speed neck. Talented builder, and reasonable as mandolins go.

Looks nice, I have to admit this is the first I've heard of that builder.

Post the deets and impressions when possible. Love their sound on the net. Been eyeballing them for a while now.

I had one of Ken's two point models for about a year. That old redwood provides a great tone. Have fun with it.

Been playing the Silverangel for a while now and can't begin to describe what a joy it has been to play. It is indeed one of the mandos in the two mando demo. Which one I don't know.

The Silverangel is a somewhat out of the box design, what with the redwood top and cross bracing. It is a very resonant but clear tone, and the g string doesn't disappear. It also has a very prominent arch to the back, so much so that very few cases will fit it. I had to do some radical bending to get a toneguard to clear this arch. I succeeded, but the case, a Travelite, is a tight fit.

This mandolin will play any style, but if you are a bluegrass only player, you would probably like something like a Collings better.

And you need to also like a distressed mandolin, which in this case is masterful. The binding looks so vintage it's scary, and the varnish is sunk into the grain in places. Definitely a mandolin that begs to be taken everywhere without worry about that first ding or scratch. My Silverangel even has the pick guard holes for the guard that was never there.

But mainly it plays like a dream and sounds heavenly. Even new they are very reasonable. I may need to order an f type sometime.

Br1ck,

Why do you say that you might like collings better for bluegrass? Do you think the collings is louder or has more cut?

That is a great looking mandolin. Just a beautiful color. It is nice to see mandolins that aren't full bursts.

The tone on the Liza Jane video is just incredible, woody, resonant, IMO a perfect tone for solo mandolin. But I wonder, being that open and resonant, if it has the mid-range punch to cut through a jam? I am actually not a huge fan of the really punchy, grassy Monroe/Compton/Gibson tone, but I have to admit, the style and the Gibson tone cut like a razor.
