Why yes...yes indeed, of course they're not. I just got a tad confused when you we're referring to them as "volume controls". |

Ah yes I suspected as much...touché. The NS -10 chart looks like something from Mr. Peabody's way back machine

The story I got about the NS-10's were they were popular in college dorm rooms because of their size. They were inexpensive speakers so the college students bought them up. The problem was they didn't sound very good, and the mixing engineers of the day decided if they could get a mix to sound good on these, that the mix would sound better on anything else. Plus the white cone looked cool and the studios need a standardized speaker monitor to aid them when they would trade recordings back and forth between studios. The NS-10 was chosen to be that speaker. So just because you see them in almost every studio, that doesn't mean they are a great speaker.

I'm not pulling your leg, that's what I heard years ago. I have the luxury of having both the NS-10's and HS8's in my studio. I have worked with the NS-10 for years and never really liked them, but I wanted to have what the big studio's have. I always thought they sounded crummy since they day I bought them. I could barely hear an EQ adjustment on them. The HS8's on the other hand, are a night and day difference. They sound fantastic. You can hear every single nuance. Every EQ change I make turns up big time in the effect on the sound. I can hear so many things I couldn't hear before.
I posted the charts to demonstrate that there's a very logical difference between the two speakers. The difference can be measured. It's not because "I just like them." Just a quick understanding of the charts shows that the NS-10's are far from being a flat reference speaker. The HS8's show a much flatter response, which is what you want. The NS-10's are a speaker technology from 1978. Very outdated. Almost 40 year old technology. Would you buy a 40 year old tv set ?????

Well maybe I should have called potentiometers. Basically a variable resistor. Ya maybe they are like gain controls. Volume controls...ya whatever.

But of course this harkens back to a discussion you and I had in a previous thread where I was tryin' to convince you of the vital, biblical and titanic importance of a good room. You simply can not look at a spec sheet, in this case frequency plots, and draw any conclusion on any level as to how this speaker, or any speaker, sounds in your room. Doesn't work that way.. That chart is measured in ostensibly a perfectly flat testing environment. Put any speaker into a real world scenario and the chart becomes a worthless piece of paper. The room plays the singular titanic roll of which and what frequencies reach your ear. i proffered the room as the single most important physical thing in your environment. The #1 priority bar none. You poo-poo'd that as inconsequential and only for rich people. Using that chart as some kind of barometer is like a guy color correcting a motion picture in post production with sunglasses on |

Interesting fact about the NS-10's. They were discontinued by Yamaha in 2001. That's about 15 years ago.
Of course the room makes a difference. My room is a fairly quiet room. Not the best, but not bad either. My problem is that my room is small and I have lot's of stuff in it. Some people like to record in the bathroom because of all the slap back they get.

Nope the NS-10 sound like garbage compared to the HS8's. No question about it, the HS8's are a major improvement.
