Like the others have said, it looks legit. Call Martin and ask them about the serial number. And, like the others have said, you need a new saddle and setup. Take it to someone good, if you're not inclined to do it yourself. Let them give the guitar a good inspection.

How's the action on that guitar? The saddle is super low and I'd hope the action is super-low with that little bit of saddle left. You might want to put a straight edge on the fretboard and extend it out and see if the bridge is level with the fretboard.

That confirms it, the guitar is real but the saddle is fake.

I'd bet good money this guitar didn't leave Nazareth like that.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm no expert by a looooong shot, but I couldn't detect the slightest hint pointing to this guitar possibly being fake.

Let me first say that I have never owned a d-28 or studied them in-depth. I see the general consensus is that it's genuine. I'm not disagreeing with that at all, but here's why I can see where the OP's coming from:
- Saddle - already commented on ITT - Truss rod hole in neck block - looks a bit untidy perhaps - Tuners - are they straight? My HD-28v has butterbean ones, so these stock tuners always look a bit 'off' to me - Never seen that back strip before, maybe it's standard and I've not noticed the detail before - Gold foil logo looks very raised As I say, I'm not saying this guitar is a fake, just that I can understand the OP's concern. A) D-28s are a lot of money, B) there was a thread just recently about an obviously fake j-45(?) that someone purchased from a shop, so people ARE pulling this sort of scam, and C) things like the tuners, gold foil logo etc is easy to purchase online, thus facilitating these scams. Nothing wrong with being vigilant, as sad a state of affairs as it is...

If this is a fake, that's quite an impressive job. If that guitar came to you used, I think that might explain some of the things that are a little off here like the saddle, truss rod hole, and tuners.

They started doing that cnc neckblock stamp somewhere around 96-98 I believe. Its stained in as opposed to burned in with an iron. It appears legit to me.

I'm not sure it is a real Martin. Just in case it is not go ahead and send it to me. You don't want a fake. HE HE.
Sure looks real to me. Congratulations. |

I know I mentioned this once before, but on one trip to a guitar center that happened to have a lot of Martins, I would say 90% of them on the wall had a saddle like this one or close to it. I don't run into many Martins in my area unless it is at a GC, and what I have seen makes me pass every time.
I didn't know if it was a Martin thing, or a GC thing... or what, but that doesn't look good. Heck, my inexpensive Washburn I picked up used off of craigslist that has a bit of a belly on the top and a not-so-straight neck has more saddle than in that picture...... and my guitar tech said he had it pretty low and didn't want to go any lower. Those strings hardly have a break angle at all. Edit: I found the thread I was talking about. This is where I was talking about the low saddles (post #34): http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...36#post4454336 This is where I linked to another forum where the person posted pictures of low saddles too (post #59): http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...74#post4454474
