Best excuse yet for not being able to turn down! "I can't find the volume control!!!"

Trouble is, I keep finding it when I'm not looking for it.

Cool Electric Guitar (Which one to choose?)

For a solid body electric, I agree, and my Fender American Deluxe Stratocaster (dark plum metallic) is quite a looker, but for jazz, my Gibson ES-347 TD semi-hollow body archtop is unbeatable, and plays like butter! It will run circles around any 335!

I have all the guitars I've ever wanted. And I love the Telecaster the best!

Ah, the Telecaster mafia has spoken.

The Les Paul is a fine choice. Play what sings to you.

But we saw it a couple of times, and it hasn't shown up at practice or gigs since. On the other hand, he has a G&L Tribute S-500. The Asian-built version of G&L's (Leo Fender's second guitar company) classic Strat-like device. It shows up for most gigs and sounds incredible every time ( and the guy's got about 15 guitars to choose from). Don't be discouraged by the Asian build. Pickups, electronics and hardware are all G&L American, and the build quality is on a par with American Standard Fenders. About $500 brand new.

The other really good Asian electrics are PRS SEs. They are very similar to the G&L approach -- manufactured over seas from PRS designs, using PRS American parts. Excellent guitars, regardless of price. A PRS SE Singlecut will get you your "Les Paul." You should be able to find a used one inexpensive enough that you can have that, and the G&L for under $1000.

This is the golden age of cheap electric guitars. Get them before they figure out how much money they're leaving on the table.

Leo's second guitar company was Music Man.

I've an American-made G&L ASat made just before Leo died in 91. So one of the last Teles designed by the guy who designed the first one.

Awesome guitar. Good for everything but Death Metal.

Tele's are great, no doubt. But have you tried an Epiphone 1960 Tribute Plus? Gibson 57 p/ups, Grover tuners, slim neck, with case about 300 under your budget.

Telecaster with a contoured body is hard to top IMO. I do Strats and SGs as well.

I suppose that's true, thanks. You own one of my favorite Leo creations, the original ASAT. As much as I love the Tele bridge pickup, I like those big MFDs even more. They are a revelation. Somewhere between a sweet Tele bridge and a filtertron. With more gain than either one. My favorite. And the Saddlelock is my favorite bridge. Lots of mass, excellent mechanics, and the most comfortable under the hand of a perpetual palm muter. Leo did not have all his bes ideas in the early 50s.

I just picked up one of these:

http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Les...ntine-PRO.aspx

and I think it is terrific. As a semi-hollow it is lighter that a standard LP and the coil splitting feature is pretty cool. Lots of tones in this thing.

Also in your price range are used Gibsons. A Les Paul Special or SG Standard would be a versatile high-quality guitar.

Oh, my Les Paul is not going anywhere except for my daughter after I die, Bob. And it IS a fine choice, BUT at the same time, that IS what makes my Telecaster better...I have no fear of taking it everywhere, whenever I play electric.

I have a Tele and I like it. Good first electric if you're used to acoustic.

But, I love Les Pauls. I have three of those. Get a studio. Same great sound without the binding and some cost.
