It depends, my ES-175 smells nice, but my L4 was owned by a chain smoker who played in a small bar for decades. The binding and pick guard are brown rather than ivory, and the smoke ate into the lacquer, removing the gloss, and making it easily rubbed off. Despite the stinky smell and tarnished look, it plays beautifully.

I love that wood smell which is coming from the inside of my 1953 L7. None of my other archtops develop such a strong scent.
