I would agree with those who say Joni has been most influential.

The one I enjoy listening to the most is Carole King.

I am not going so far as greatest, but one of my favorites is Laura Nyro. Lots of variety. Wrote some great songs for other artists. Blood, Sweat, and Tears And When I Die is an excellent example. Three Dog Night's Elis Coming is another.

To be honest I don't really listen to female song writers. For some reason I don't care to. Carol King I like and she is an awesome song writer. Beyond that I don't have a clue. Anybody can write a song. To write a good song is rare even for the most talented.

Default Not yet mentioned at this point...

...is one of my favorites: Austin's Eliza Gilkyson.
3 or 4 songs per album are classics, and she also has a great voice. She doesn't have many well-recorded live performances, but here's one from Austin City Limits. It's a song of lament for a New Mexican drummer friend who killed himself.

just a +1 to Laura Nero. First woman that came to mind - not to take away from Joni, that is. . .

My Brooklyn homegirl Carole King, with or without Gerry Goffin, hands-down; one of the mainstays of the Brill Building girl-group era, successfully reinvented herself during the singer/songwriter era and not only maintained her relevance, but arguably surpassed her earlier success - small wonder they chose her as the subject of a Broadway musical...

Yes! See my post #12 above! Love to see fellow Laura Nyro fans! Lots of people know her songs, but don't know her. She died so young and her huge body of work is from the 60's and 70's, probably why.

HUH?!

Since I first saw her in the 70's I have loved the incomparable Stevie Nicks. The night I saw this first-run I was floored at her talent.

Buckingham was a superb guitarist and great producer, but Stevie was a mesmerizing front woman and a songwriting hit machine in Mac and on her own.

A push as far as I am concerned--Laura Nyro (immediate past generation) and Lucinda Williams (current generation).

And for the record, I would do anything Iris Dement asked me to do.

That said, the "greatest"? A bow to all the names already mentioned, but for my ears, surely Joni Mitchell takes pride of place. Not just for her own take on her own music, but for the number of her songs recognized for their artistry and covered beautifully by other performers from the earliest days of her career. (Tom Rush was an early and avid proponent...and his Urge For Going never fails to fill me with goose bumps and nostalgia.)

There's room for lots of favorites; but Joni Mitchell is pretty much in a class by herself....

I agree with the accolades given Laura Nyro even after reiterating my vote for Joni. Laura was brilliant and died far too young.Just listen to her best two albums to get the idea that she was a profound talent.

While I totally agree that Joni gets the award, i was happy to see that Shawn Colvin got a few mentions. The other lady that is always in heavy rotation around here is Roseanne Cash.

Laura Nyro was brilliant and died way too young (cancer s*cks). A measure of her talent was the caliber of artists who covered her songs. But she did not live long enough to influence an entire generation (or two) of songwriters.
