Easy Synth Machine for Background
Hello All!
New to the group - first question. I am looking for a synth pedal so that I can add simple string patches to back up my guitar and vocals whether I am picking or strumming. When I look at things like the Roland GR-55 it seems that if I were to try and master that beast (assuming it meets my needs) it would be like using NASA to launch a Frisbee. I've got a Digitech VL2 that provides vocal harmonies - I guess I am looking for something that does the same for the guitar... Thanks in advance! |

If you're looking at software and MIDI interface to allow you to play string patches on a guitar the Fishman Triple Play will do that, a bit cheaper than the Roland. Sounds are software only of course, and they include a starter pack of sounds including some string patches.
The same sort of software/sample based string sounds are available as part of virtual instruments, software plug ins you can purchase for computer recording software (DAW). Some DAWs even include some useful starter string samples of their own. I used to use the Roland MIDI quite a bit, but my composing space is somewhat crowded and I've moved to using the Triple Play more lately. I use string sounds from Garritan and East/West along with the stuff that included in Apple Logic X. I've only used MIDI pickups on electric guitars, but if mounted and calibrated correctly they should work on acoustics. An alternative that one can use is what I call generically "a little plastic keyboard." My keyboard skills are quite basic, but for controlling MIDI these are inexpensive, work with the DAW hosted samples easily, and don't take up much room.

I don't know anything about this pedal, but you may want to look into it if you like analogue sounds.

I'm not sure what you're looking to sound like exactly, but I love the way the Electro-Harmonix Mel9 adds mellotron sounds to acoustic guitar. I mostly use the cello and flute patches, but here's a video of a guy playing some fingerpicking with the strings patch adding subtle atmosphere (you can get less subtle with the thing, too).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7d7EQU8daHo The pedal tracks amazingly accurately. EHX also makes a few other pedals that provide similar tracking with synth and other keyboard sounds. Might be worth checking out. Louis |
