Gibson Serial Numbers
I have an old Gibson archtop guitar - a Super 400c. It has one number written on an orange label inside the body (#913480) and one stamped on the back of the peg head (627852) plus Made In U.S.A. stamped under the number.
Why two different serial numbers? Which one dates the guitar most accurately? I was told it's a 1968, but info on the Vintage Guitar HQ site suggests Made In U.S.A. only started after 1970.

If I remember correctly the number on the headstock is the serial number assigned on the guitar's completion & the one inside is the factory order number, which was assigned when it was begun. They should corroborate each other in as much as they should be of the same year, or else the FON might relate to the year before the serial if a guitar was started in December & finished in January.

Gibson stopped using FONs by 1961. I have never run into a Gibson with two totally different serial numbers on the label and the headstock other than an occasional screw up with maybe one digit placed out of order. Sounds almost like the neck is a replacement off another guitar.

By the way, how does that affect the value when you have mismatched numbers on the neck and body? By half?

Is there a 'volute' where the headstock meets the neck? That started around the time the 'Made in USA' stamp appeared.

As mentioned above, probably a neck replaced by Gibson. Another possibility is that the guitar was sent back to Gibson for repair and they refinished it. I've seen that on a couple guitars and mandolins from the 1920s with "new" 1960s serial number on the back of the headstock.
