To your point, the SM58 may 'not be the issue' the OP is having. That is entirely possible. But trying another mic is a fast easy way to answer that question. If a better / different mic doesn't address the needs, maybe there is a more appropriate solution.
I agree on the "choice-for-voice",,,,, to a certain degree. The versatility for various performance-environments is also an important consideration. (loud vs quiet stages/rooms,,,,music genre, etc)

That said; no matter which mic you choose, you have to use it properly,,, whether that's how you gain-structure the mic-channel,,,, or how you EQ the mic,,,,, and most certainly,,, how you address the mic. You can put a $700. e965 in the hands of someone who's not using it properly, and it'll sound "thin and hollow" as well.
