MXL 910 deal at GC
I've been on the lookout for a condenser mic to record fingerstyle acoustic solos. I'm on a tight budget these days, but I'm willing to spend a few bucks if I can get a significant improvement over my 1970s AKG D120Es or the internal mics on my TASCAM recorder.
GC is offering MXL 910 for $60 (MSRP $300, usual GC price $200) for the next day or so. What says AGF? Good deal, or could I do much better for the same simoleons? Or just not the right tool for the job?

That MXL goes on sale all the time. Sometimes with a SDC pencil condenser mic as part of the package for under $100. I don't think anyone every buys one for $200. Amazon price is $109.
Frequency chart is fairly flat - a slight dip at 1K Hz, a bump at 10K Hz. For the price, hard to go wrong, except it does not come with an external shock mount.

Much better than that and they'd be paying you to take it.
It's a deal. You'll have a functional mic for very little outlay. It's an excellent way to learn this stuff. Don't think for a moment that you'll end up with a Neumann-grade mic. You won't. But you will probably end up with a mic you can use and appreciate. And when the right time comes for a better mic, you'll be hungry for the next level and you'll understand why. That's the beauty of this stuff - the learning curve is always there for us to climb no matter how long we've been messing with it.

Follow Up
I took GC up on their generous offer, and was not disappointed. MXL 910 is a big improvement over what I had. It gives crisp, clean highs with lots of detail, and good solid bass. The bass response seems, to my untrained ears, to depend on placement much more than does the treble response. I Show-and-Telled a tune I recorded with it, and somebody asked what strings I used - I think that says something about the mic!
Thanks again, AGF!
