Default Neumann TLM 102 VS Blue Baby Bottle

Which one of those two mics would sound best in your opinion for recording nylon string instrumental guitar?

That is impossible to answer. However I do suggest if you are recording a solo guitar you record in stereo.

Neither. I would suggest looking for a pair of mics with low noise and a more-or-less flat frequency response.

Thanks for your answer, the idea was to blend it with a lineaudio CM3, one large diaphragm and one small

The Neumann TLM102 is one of the best new Neumann mics to come out in years, they sound great, are reasonably priced, and I prefer it over the Baby Bottle. And I don't have prejudice toward Blue mics as I own and use a Blue Bluebird and Kiwi quite a bit, and also own a few Neumanns (U89, M147). I just think the TLM102 is a standout microphone. But as in all things, tone is subjective, I would buy both, and return the one you like least if that's an option. It's the only way you'll know which one is better for you.

Also check out the Mojave brand from Royer. I have the 301 which is a superb mic that many think is comparable to or better than the Neumanns. New designs for the digital age.

Have you heard the TLM102? It's one of the best new mics Neumann has brought in years!

"And I don't have prejudice toward Blue mics as I own and use a Blue Bluebird and Kiwi quite a bit,"

Then wouldn't you say you don't have a prejudice against Blue Mics?

TLM102: quiet, and natural sounding. Probably better especially on the 1 and 2 string which tend to sound plasticky.

Ty Ford

I have a 102 at the studio, and one at home as well. Awesome mic for the price, heck even for one 3x the price. It does have a big proximity effect. And it sounds even better if you unscrew the screen and take out the foam inside, more detail and a more open sound that way.
