Default Favorite JT Songs

What's your favorite James Taylor song, and why? Which one's were easiest and hardest to learn?

Of course, there's "You've Got A Friend." I just listened to "Fire and Rain." Since I'm a relative newbie to fingerstyle, these are a couple I plan to learn.

Hi Kats,

I know how to play a lot of JT songs, but the ones I regularly come back to are "The Secret of Life", "Copperline", "Something in the Way She Moves," and "Blossom."

I love "You Can Close Your Eyes ". And I'd love to nail the intro guitar part to "Enough to Be On Your Way"

Mostly the ones that never saw any airtime on the radio back in the day and even now. The more obscure JT songs have always called to me most but there are those incredible songs (way too many to name but you all know them) that were chart busters and they had merit too. "You Can Close Your Eyes" I bet I've played a thousand times. Really love "Walking Man" and just learned "My Traveling Star". Not many JT songs that I don't try to play but miss the mark many times. He's a consummate writer who just seems to "get it" time and time again. He keeps writing "em and I keep trying my best to play 'em!

Just for accuracy sake- "You've Got A Friend" is a Carole King song- but JT certainly put his stamp on it and took it to #1- I believe his only chart topper..

I like to play that song, as well as:

"Fire & Rain"
"Shower The People"
"Secret Of Life"
"Knocking Around The Zoo"

Interesting side note is that he rarely starts a song on a minor chord....even sad ones like "Fire & Rain"....

I recently acquired an exquisite cedar topped/HOG dread that was luthier made. It is 13 years old and has totally come into its own with a beautiful tone, especially fingerpicked. I sat out to realize an old goal of getting into fingerpicking and tackled Fire and Rain first, since it's sort of an anthem from my youth. I was amazed at how really simple JT's songs really are, the "secret" to them lies in the nuances he puts on how he plays his chords and his ho's and po's. Tackling Carolina on my Mind now. I found an over 40 year old book on eBay for the astronomical sum of $.01 that has his early stuff transcribed by Happy Traum. It literally took me an hour to nail Fire and Rain.

Again- I hate to be THAT guy but- James Taylor co-wrote 'Her Town Too" with J.D. Souther and Waddy Wachtell.
