Default Another Fake Martin

This one is an attempt at a 000-28. Not close but someone not familiar with the real thing could buy it. Seller may be unaware it's a fake, reported to Ebay.

I always wanted a 000-28 with a tricked out white binding on the headstock and abalone rosette. Oh well.

I am not very knowlegeable about Martin guitars.

What sets this one off as a fake?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Body shape
Diameter of soundhole
bound fretboard
bound headstock
rosette too large, wrong material

Probably a few more but that's enough to know it's bogus.

First, the headstock is the wrong shape. (More clearly seen from the back, where the headstock joins the neck.) No Martin headstock has binding around the edges. A 000-28 does not have binding along the sides of the fretboard (That signifies a 35 or up model.) There is no center wood strip down the inside of the guitar. The rosette is wrong. The binding around the body doesn't look quite right.

I'm sure there are more things.

Well, at least this one "looks" like one of the custom models! The previous one I saw, I did not even have to enlarge pictures to spot! :-)

Here's a real one with a buy-it-now price set at $500 less than the fake's starting bid. No affiliation but I can say that's fairly priced based on used guides. Not everyone is a crook or a previously duped seller on eBay but you really do have to be careful of the fakes.

All of the items mentioned above mark the instrument in question as a fake, in particular the binding on the neck and fingerboard and the shape of the neck heel and cap, which are relatively large and un-Martn like.

Another issue is the light-colored wood. It doesn't appear to be Indian Rosewood to me. Note the nice dark wood on the second listing for a real 000-28.

Also, the fingerboard and perhaps the bridge on the fake 000-28 are rosewood instead of ebony. They didn't even try dying the fingerboard black.
