Please Recommend Pickup for Taylor DN-5
Hi all. I am supposed to be picking up a Taylor DN-5 (sitka/mahogany) an dwould appreciate pickup recomendations.
Price is a bit of a factor, however I would rather save for something if it's significantly better. Another factor is easy installation. Of I can do it myself without much experience that is a plus as I would rather not pay a tech. Again though, I can always save the money to do this later if the difference is significant. Thanks in advance

I would recommend a k & k pure western mini pickup. I installed one and they sound great and are pretty easy install yourself. Most shops would install it for $50 or so if you are not comfortable doing it yourself...

You know I have to say I have tried a lot of pickups over the years and I have liked and disliked things about each. If you want a tone that sounds very natural less electric but yet has the ability to cut through a mix and you can install yourself easily, I would try the Dazzo. $199 but your install is free. Two pickups are glued with epoxy to the underside of your bridge plate. Easy to place, compared to the three discs of the K and K and having to make your own jig. Also, if you need to try a new placement, the Dazzo's are easily removed without damage to them or your guitar. K&K, JJB, Dazzo's and Trance Amulet all fall under the same type and yield similar results in tone.
BTW, I currently have Baggs anthem's installed in other guitars that I also like in a different way, but the Dazzo might be slowly taking over the top spot for me.

To be honest, it's worth considering Taylor's own ES2. Just had my 414 back with the upgrade to ES2 and it's excellent - pretty much as natural as the Pure Mini but with less need to eq out any excessive frequencies. I am a big fan of the Pure Mini but I love how my upgraded Taylor sounds.

How about the DTAR Wavelength? Is that worth considering?

I'm new to this forum but have spent the last 15+ years and more money than I care to remember on pickups & preamps! I'm recently back to playing acoustic instruments more again and have forgotten how bad acoustic amplification GAS can be!
The first question you should ask yourself is why do you want a pickup? Maybe you said that but I must have missed it. Playing settings and needs will sort of self guide you to which pickup may work better than others for your application. All pickups are a bit of a compromise so as long as you realize that, then it's all fun and games after that! |
