Default Ragtime Ramble

Complete song all the way through, no cut and paste mixing. I guess I'm playing this between 40 and 50% of performance speed of the original. Maybe I can get it to 60% to 70% in time, but I'm not pushing it, lol. I'm in no hurry

Richard Saslow cover - Ragtime Ramble:

Nice Barry! It think it swings real good at that tempo! I'm about 10 bpm behind you, and still struggling with the second ending, but making progress

Thanks Bob. The guy really rips through these tunes doesn't he? I'll never get them that fast. I'm happy with half speed.

Hi Barry,

Yes, Richard is a speed demon, right up there with Mark Hanson.

Check out Bunny Barnes on YouTube, she plays Richard's tunes slower than he does and claims they sound better at a reasonable tempo (I'm certain she has the chops to play them much faster).

If you google Scott Joplin you can find quotes attributed to him that people were playing his stuff too fast, he claimed ragtime should be played at a march tempo, around 120 bpm.

I think you are playing it at a very nice tempo, and I'm playing along with your recording as a practice aid to get myself above my current speed of 100 bpm (default setting on my metronome, lol) which is too slow to get the swing feel.

Thanks for posting this. I've got a new to me Zoom H4n and have set myself a goal of making a decent recording of this tune

I've seen a couple of Bunny Barnes' videos, good stuff. I've watched RagtimeUK's videos as well. He plays them all at a good clip, not as fast as Saslow, but he moves along pretty good. He has a few other videos of interest on youtube as well.

Here he is playing Ragtime Ramble. If I can get within a few bpm of this I'll be happy:

Good one, Barry! I actually prefer the slower pace compared to the clip you posted. I think with your pace you can "take it in".........kind of move your head to the little groove going on there. The notes seem to mean more as they respect and present the melody.....just my thought!
Looks like a really fun piece to mess with!!

Thanks Fred.

I don't mind trying to play it faster, actually when I practice it I play it slowly a few times then do speed bursts and then play the whole thing as fast as I can pushing my mistake boundaries and then I back it down to a comfortable what comes natural pace.

Right now though I can't see how I would put my own spin on it if I play it as fast as the original recording. Playing it slower allows me to change up emphasis and put something extra in it. Which could be taken as just another old guy that can't play fast anymore, , but the faster pace seems so vanilla sounding if you know what I mean.

The original recording that I have is actually faster than ragtimeUK's video that I posted.

I have an original composition I call "Ragtime Ramble"--penned in 2004; recorded on October 6, 2004.

Never knew until now that there was another musical piece by that title already in use--a Rag called "Ragtime Ramble" from a book published back in 1974 called "The Art Of Ragtime Guitar" by Richard S. Saslow. Re-issued with updates in 2011 under the title "The New Art Of Ragtime Guitar."

Too late now, I reckon. But, lesson learned. Next time, I'll do a little fact-checking before I name one of my compositions.

I like the slower tempos myself. I play Ragtime Ramble a bit faster than you,TB, but not as fast as Saslow. I've done the whole book, I've since nixed Boogaloo Down LaRue and Bloozinay, they're just not my cup of cappucinno.
I'm currently working on Hanson's Red, White, and Blue Rag. Nice piece but again way too fast on the recording for my taste.
I just started my own YouTube channel back in December, I recorded Just What the Doctor Ordered, Coney Island Cakewalk, and Ragpickin.
